Nature versus nurture is a living and expanding controversy that pertains to the significant role of individual’s genetic traits including native skills and abilities and innate knowledge obtained and determined right after the process of fertilization against the personal experiences and environmental factors resulting in variation. I think nature has higher influence in development primarily because genes are the determinants of biological qualities and physical capabilities. Anatomically and physiologically, the human body is dynamic and systematic and it has definite function and purpose and don’t always depend on the environment. Evidence shows that the brain can function and generate information even without relying to the senses through the use of imagination and analysis. The anatomical shape and size of the brain also affect the level of intelligence. Theory states that some genes can influence individual's action, decision and the ability to choose what kind of environment is essential and suited for him. Genes also affect the ability to progress and achieve the developmental milestone. Generally, individuals would gain basic skills and knowledge at a given time in a natural and normal human environment unless there are developmental delays and disorders as well as diseases that affect the developmental process. For instance, different children will be able to smile, speak, crawl, sit, stand and walk at a certain age in fair human place as long as they are not genetically handicapped. Genetics contribute more in development of intelligence and personality traits. Several researches prove that identical twins raised separately are highly similar in IQ more than fraternal twins raised together and much more than adoptive siblings. Research also shows that the personality of biological siblings is more similar than adoptive siblings. Also, identical twins reared apart are far more similar in personality than randomly selected pairs of people (Weiss, Bates, & Luciano, 2007). Today, the debate is no longer just about nature versus nurture because both were proven to be essential for growth and development; it’s also about the interaction and correlation of nature and nurture.

ReplyDeleteThe Ecological Theory of Urie Brofenbrenner serves as a guide for educational system. It emphasizes the process of learning from a simple to complex environment and situations. It reveals the interaction and participation of an individual in his own family, school, church, neighborhood and other institutions in the community. Ecological theory can be applied in the educational system through the process of choosing an environment that is conducive for learning and acquiring knowledge and it will eventually lead to better growth and development. For instance, in establishing my own family, I will try to choose a better partner to live with and then we will start to have our own children. I will choose a more peaceful place where cultures, laws and traditions are fair. Parent provides knowledge, training and proper values for their children at home. Later on, the offspring will start to explore the society. They will meet new people that will serve as their guide such as teachers. They will learn new lessons, formulate their own beliefs based on their experiences and create new ideas that can help in their involvement in the society. As an educator, there is a need for me to obtain family histories, conduct cultural analysis and study values and laws of a certain environment in order to understand the educational needs and to provide a quality education. In applying the ecological theory in educational system, I need to analyze the situation and status of every participant. I need to respect their religious beliefs, the culture and traditions they follow and also I must value their worth. Since institutions in a given society are linked together and they may imply different principles, verifying and making sure that the information that are gained by the student are right and in line with the proper norms is one of my responsibilities. Ecological change is inevitable, therefore educational system will experience constant changes from time to time and it needs to adapt to the demand of the people and environment. Teachers must submit to change, be flexible to students and environment, embrace technological advancement and must continue to update knowledge regarding the current events.
ReplyDeletei think both nurture and nature are both important. They are both vital to the learning process of a certain person. However I still think nurture makes the bigger role in a person whole development for the environmental factors usually builds and influenced which path what a certain person will be. What course shall the person will take. What kind of job what the person will have. What person will the person like. Most of the said things are highly influenced by environment although some people pursue their given talents still the environment puts up the big role in building a certain person.
ReplyDeleteI think that Ecological theory is already been applied in the educational system today. Why did I said such thing. Its baart his/ecause as a child start/ his learning from the house which the parents and co-siblings are the first peoplke who educate the child the first word, walk, and so on starts within this small area and then as the child grows he /she encounters more people who will be able for him to learn more than he already learned from his/her house which we call his neighbor. Then as he goes to elementary school where he/she will learn the former way of education and will mingle more people than his neigbor alone and so more happens in his/her high school lifwe through college and untill he/she will develope the right skills and knowledge to became a comeplete adult.
ReplyDeleteChild’s development may reflect, specifically, his psychological and emotional changes like his own attitude, personality, behavior, or character. A child can be developed well by achieving a well-nurtured attitude or behavior. As a parent, we can shape and mold the child by simply imposing the good character or behavior. Even though the attitude and behavior of the parents can be inheritable (by means of genes), for me, the question is “What if both parents demonstrate and having bad attitude” and there’s a tendency that their child would inherit it, would they allow them to have the same character to that of their child? I think no because no parents (especially, good and responsible parent) will allow the child to become bad too. So, imposing proper nurturing of the child should be used by means of adequate care, attention, guidance, support, as well as counseling. Try to look those child without receiving proper nurturance from their parents, some of them turned in the wrong path (“naligaw ng landas”), as a result they do things that is unacceptable to the society like those teens who uses rugby, drinking too hard (“lasinggero”), or worst, if they become pregnant at the early age because they searching or seeking for the love and nurture that they don’t receive from their parents. That’s why they do these things, as a way to cover or hide their sad feelings. Try also to look those child who are a product of divorce or separated parents, they need a lot of care and guidance from their parents. But since it is already separated, there’s a sense of emptiness on the part of the child. They seeking love, affection, attention, and comfort. But, by means of adequate nurturing we can help them to supplement the sense of being emptied. We can provide for them those things like love, attention, and comfort they needed to feel (ie, psychologically or emotionally). In this way, the child may turn into a good or better person.
ReplyDeleteBrofenbrenner’s ecological theory says that everything in a child and his environment affects the way a child grows and develops. Parents are said to be the first teacher. Responsible parent who often teach their child (at home) will develop a sense of achievement, motivated to learn, and mostly especially the values that they learn from their parents. A child who receives a lot of attention, guidance, and support from their parent (especially in terms of education) may result of being responsible and well-inspired child. Furthermore, a child will have motivation and strive harder to achieve a better performance in school. In some instances, both parents that were laid off from work could affect their children’s education, they will have insufficient budget for tuition fees and other materials needed in school, thus leading to unmotivation of the child to learn or go to school, or worst if the child can no longer go to school because of lack of financial state. Whereas, those parents who has been promoted from work will have a positive effect on the child’s education like being motivated and eager to learn. Some students are extrinsically motivated to study and learn, especially if their parents were promoted from work, because of the rewards that their parents will give to them especially if they have a good academic performance. Another thing is the peer relationship of the child in school. If the child/student are engaging in those kind of peer who is cooperatively and actively participate in school will get or “copy” that kind of behavior which is good and acceptable as well as essential. Whereas, those student who accompanying another bad or lazy students like gang, or students who doesn’t like to do their homework, or those student who likes to have “cutting classes” will have definitely negative effects on the child/student. Another thing is teacher-student relationship. A teacher who always gives praise and encouragement to the child/student will contribute to the development of self-trust, self-confidence, and motivation to study well and to learn eagerly. Whereas, those teachers who is judgmental to the students, for instance, if the student does not answer it correctly the teacher will provoke the answer, so the feelings of the students will go down, thus leading to losing of self trust and unconfident attitude. There are times that the student will not actively participate in the lecture-discussion because of the feeling that if they answer the question they have already wrong answer. For me as a future professional teacher, I should always observed my actions and deliverables, especially inside the classroom, because every action that I take will also contribute or affect the child’s growth and development of the child since majority of the time of the student/child spends most in the school. We, teachers, are considered to be the second parents.

ReplyDeleteThere is much to be said on the subject of Nature vs. Nurture. As I have demonstrated and have clearly stated in class, my personal opinion is that both are equally important. First of all, what kind of "Development" are we referring to? It could be Physical, Emotional, Mental.. even Spiritual. Given that I do have to make a choice, Nurture, for me is still more important. (Even though, in the class debate I needed to defend Nature) .. True Enough, Physical and Mental Health is irreversible. What is genetically written can never be written off. A handicapped, or mentally incapacitated individual will never be normal, he/she will always have the limitations his/her condition has deemed him in. With that being said, to begin with, I think genetic anomalies are in itself were caused by the environment itself. Somewhere in the beginning of the blood line, someone must have made the mistake of drinking too much alcohol, or taking in prohibited drugs while carrying a child in his/her womb. If permitting my imagination to run amok, I would go as far as thinking nuclear and environmental changes must have caused some of these diseases and abnormalities that eventually led to genetic conditions we face today. It is paradoxical, to say the least, that the more vaccines, and cures we research and discover, the more diseases and viruses spring up, like wild mushrooms. So, in its entirety, I think, starting with the Evolution of all living creatures, it has always been Environmental, thus, always been Nurture. It is our gradual evolution and adaptation to our environment, our instinct to survive, that led us to where we are. Having said this piece, I think that although bloodlines and genetic anomalies are irreversible, there is still much to be said about a mother who nurtures her baby inside her womb. A mother who takes care of herself and the life she carries inside her. Eating healthy food, not smoking (and being exposed to smoke), drinking medicine responsibly, and, of course, loving the life she is carrying inside her, are still considered Nurture, but also pre-natal, and may contribute to the neonatal condition of the child. Into the world, the child faces more environmental influences that will eventually shape his/her interests, his/her personality, his/her behavior, even his/her morals. I, myself, am now suffering from a degenerative condition, and still think that I have been shaped MORE by my environment, than by my genetic inheritance and predispositions altogether. ^^

Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Model can be greatly applied in the educational system. The school is, after all, part of the Mesosystem of this model. Most of the time, children will be at school, therefore he/she is exposed to the school environment a lot. His/her teachers will be his/her second parents, whilst, his/her classmates and friends will be his/her siblings. Surely, it’s a different environment from home, but I think that a child’s intellectual and social development mostly occurs in school. As teachers it is imperative that we protect our charges. We have to make sure that they grow up as academically, and morally sound individuals. Teachers should learn how to adjust, modify, or mend other factors in the ecological model, to protect the child at the center. Making sure that the child is taken care of at home, his/her needs are looked after is very important. Getting the child involved in organizations where his/her interests lie (religious, or otherwise). Even as far as serving as an advocate for families in need. The Ecological Model not just shows the environmental factors that greatly affect an individual, but also that each factor has a moral responsibility to protect and care for the development of the child.
1. The debate on nature and nurture that centers on the questions of whether human capabilities are inborn or acquired through experience has been an issue for centuries. My stand on that issue won’t change that nurture plays a more important role in determining the course of human development even though this has been already discussed in the class. Well yes, I agree that nature comes first and nurture is just second but the question is that which of the two weighs more and not who comes first. Both are playing an important role, but to me, nurture has more weight than nature. I believe that knowledge is acquired through experiences and interactions with the world. The human’s mind becomes occupied as an individual matures. The moment an individual is born, he/she is being influenced by his/her environment right away. What an individual sees, hears, tastes, smells and feels are all provided by our environment. What we become in the present and future is what the environment has nurtured us. I agreed when John Watson and B.F Skinner stated that human nature is completely malleable, in the sense that early training or intervention can turn a child into any kind of adult regardless of his/her heredity. The environment’s role is very crucial and vital in contributing to an individual’s personality. Our feelings, actions and behaviors are all directly influenced through nurture and therefore, we are being molded and guided by our environment.
ReplyDelete2. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of human development has been applied in the educational system, from the informal type up to the formal type of schooling. The child’s environment has a crucial role on how everything in the child affects his/her growth and development. Parents, as the child’s first teacher, have a big role in contributing to the child’s learning. The child will be surrounded and influenced by his/her family, relatives, school, neighborhood/peers, culture values, ideologies, norms and law. The school plays an immense role in the child’s growth and development where he/she will spend most of his/her time studying in. Since the Microsystems are the immediate environment the child lives in, it is important how they will interact with the child, if it is nurturing and encouraging, then the child will most likely grow better and live in a healthy environment. How they will interrelate with each other or work together for the sake of the child is a fundamental aspect in shaping their growth. It is important that the immediate environment will have a good relationship with each other because it will affect the child’s development. There should be a mutual relationship with each other, as an example, the parents should be able to take an active role in the child’s school like attending the PTA meetings, graduation, monthly school activities and others. Also, the child will be guided with different values and laws that he/she should comply to. That way, it will help ensure the child’s overall growth. As a teacher, we should monitor these kinds of event in our student’s life. We must be fully aware for what we do and teach them because as their second parents, we take part in shaping their development as an individual. All aspects that comprises the development of the child are significant, thus, there should be a harmony among them because if one of these aspects failed to comply, it will have an effect on the gradually until it affects the holistic or totality development of the child.
As for me, nature has more weight in the development of an individual. There are a lot of traits/characteristics of an individual which are product of the genetic combination of the parents which are irreversible that no matter how strong the environmental factors are, they will always be permanent throughout the individual’s lifetime like physical traits like the color of the hair/eyes, height and complexion. With these traits, the individual can advance himself over the rest or he may be left behind also as a result of these. Furthermore, it has been found through studies that genes make a substantial contribution, including psychological traits such as intelligence and personality. There are also instances wherein some genetic conditions inherited from one of the parents or combinations of genes can cause permanent condition like total blindness or deafness without any level of reversal of the situation and another example are those who are practically certain to eventually develop Huntington's disease according to their genotype. If a child is born deaf/mute due to a genetic mutation, it will not learn to speak any language regardless of the environment. In addition, traits that reflect the underlying talents and temperaments, how proficient with language a person is, how religious, how liberal or conservative, are partially heritable. A very convincing experiment conducted by T.J. Bouchard, Jr. has shown data that has been significant evidence for the importance of genes when testing middle-aged twins reared together and reared apart. The results shown have been important evidence against the importance of environment when determining, happiness, for example. In the Minnesota study of twins reared apart, it was actually found that there was higher correlation for monozygotic twins reared apart than monozygotic twins reared together. Also, highlighting the importance of genes, these correlations found much higher correlation among monozygotic than dizygotic twins that had a correlation of .08 when reared together and -.02 when reared apart (Lykken & Tellegen, 1996).
ReplyDeleteAs an educator, I think I can apply this theory of ecological development by being a dynamic educator. I will not confine learning inside the classroom with the lecturer in front and monopolizing the discussion while her students are bogged down absorbing all the concepts she’s been murmuring. But instead, aside from classroom learning, I will include the bigger environment outside which pertains to the parents/guardians, the local government unit, the non-government organizations, church, the health services provided in the community and other social organizations that exists in which I could have access to. For the parents, through the parent-teacher association, I could schedule consultation for parents regarding the academic and social status of their children, and hand in hand work out with them on how to maximize their children’s potential, that is, if they will cooperate. School programs like nutrition month, essay writing contests, quiz bees, inter-school intramurals, retreats/recollection and family day are also effective tools that encourage participation of parents and relatives, church, government, health providers and other social groups.
I Think both. Nature is your genes. The physical and personality traits determined by your genes stay the same irrespective of where you were born and raised. Nurture refers to your childhood, or how you were brought up. If you were a happy kid and well-looked after as a child, you will have a better personality than if you were raised by parents who neglected you, abused or didn't pay attention.
ReplyDeleteUrie Bronfenbrenner Ecological Theory is already applied in our educational system today.Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917-2005) developed the ecological systems theory to explain how everything in a child and the child's environment affects how a child grows and develops. He labeled different aspects or levels of the environment that influence children's development, including the microsystem, the mesosystem, the exosystem, and the macrosystem. The microsystem is the small, immediate environment the child lives in. Children's microsystems will include any immediate relationships or organizations they interacts with, such as their immediate family or caregivers and their school or daycare. How these groups or organizations interact with the child will have an effect on how the child grows; the more encouraging and nurturing these relationships and places are, the better the child will be able to grow. Furthermore, how a child acts or reacts to these people in the microsystem will affect how they treat her in return. Each child's special genetic and biologically influenced personality traits, what is known as temperament, end up affecting how others treat them.
ReplyDelete1. I think nurture has more weight in the development of one mankind because the values that have been taught or tried to brought up by the parents has a big effect in human behavioural traits. The persons’ character that had been built up or developed will be lifetime personality of a person and will come out naturally. Nurture is the effect by the people in your life during your growing up years. While, the nature means something inherited in the person how they’re born. Nature is the genetics you received like hair color.
ReplyDelete2. As we all know, the 5 systems of Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory are microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and chronosystem. All of these are already applied in the educational system but the most obvious one is the mesosystem. It has the most direct influence on the developing child. Because these systems are already applied, the important thing to do is just to improve those systems. The school is the students’ second home. Teachers role is to make sure the students have a good relationship with their friends, neighbourhood, and ofcourse their family. For example, when a child has a problem in their home, they may have difficulty with school. Whenever we feel that the child has a problem, we can talk to them privately so that we can help them solve it. And also, peer influences may cause family problems. We can also improve this by becoming their second parent by teaching, guiding and helping them grow and develop individually having a good relationship with each other. We should make sure that the child is properly loved and influenced by their parents and friends.

ReplyDelete1. Which has more weight in development: Nature or Nurture? Explain..
ReplyDeleteNature vs. Nurture—Both of them contribute with the development of a human being. But the question “which weighs more”? , is up to now used as a debate. Some say NURTURE because the environment influences us more, others say NATURE because they say what can we NURTURE without NATURE. For me, NURTURE weighs more, it really has something to do with our environment, how we handle things. It influences us, like for example, you can be “in nature” a singer, but still you can be nurtured more than a singer. I can prove myself by citing examples, thru experiences. My mom always tell me when I was in my secondary education, “Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are”. This has nothing to do with Nature but is more on environmental influences. We are talking about the “NORMAL” person’s point of view, we are all born without anything in mind, meaning we don’t know anything yet, as we grow we have come to know every little thing around us, we observe, so we our fed by the environment on how to respond to things, and in that way, we learn, we our developed.
We have a lot in mind on how to prove which weighs more. The thing is we all know that Nature and Nurture are both part of our lives and they both shape who we are.
2. How do you think you can apply the Ecological Theory of Urie B. in the educational system?
Well, the application of the theories in the educational system is quite obvious. Starting with the first theory (Microsystem), we learn our first “ABC’s” at home, we had our first playmates, we learn from them, we go to church with our family, and we learn from God’s words. Then our parents will send us to school to learn more, for us to have more knowledge and to be more developed. And that includes experiences (Mesosystem). We share our experiences to our friends in school, same thing as we share the experiences we had from school to our parents, we apply what is thought in church then we share it to people we know. We are talking about applying these theories in the educational system, Each one of us has his/ her own background, I maybe moody, she may be not, something is beautiful for her, but not beautiful for me, we are all different, these are realities, because we have different cultures, we were nurtured in different ways/ manners(Macrosystem). For educators, they should have a little background of each of her/his student, so she/he be able to handle things right with the students, and that is very important. Say for example, the student you know who’s very bright and is outstanding suddenly doesn’t perform well, there surely is a problem, can be problem with friends, personal problems or maybe family problems (Chronosystem). Same as when a new student comes in the class without friends and who comes to be a loner, knowing she/he is a newcomer (Exosystem), the teacher/ educator should know how to deal with these things. Above all these, Per this theoretical construction, each system contains roles, norms and rules which may shape psychological development.
This perplexing issue is one of the greatest debates of all time. As discussed previously in class, nature and nurture both play an important role in the development of a child. But then again, I still believe that nurture has more weight in a child’s holistic development. I agree that our physical attributes, intelligence, and personalities are determined by our genes but I guess these traits are not solely responsible as to who we are as a person. A child might possess abnormalities that impair different functions primarily because environmental triggers were present during the moment of conception. There are some children who have chromosomal aberrations and yet they excel in different fields because of the presence of a support system. Moreover, the upbringing of a child contributes a lot to his or her development. Home is the basic foundation of the child’s development since this is where he or she learns the fundamentals. How a child is nourished in the confines of his or her home immensely affects as to how he or she acts outside the home. If the child is well nourished, there is a higher possibility that the child will turn into a responsible individual as he or she matures. As the child moves to a bigger perspective in life, environment plays a vital role into his or her development.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Ecological Theory of Urie Bronfenbrenner is already applied in the Educational System since school is part of the Mesosytem. As I pointed out earlier, home is the basic foundation of the child’s development because basic fundamentals were first taught here by parents and other family members. This is part of the Microsystem wherein an individual first encounters the most social interactions he/she gains through his/her family members, peers, neighbors, church and others whom the individual has direct contact with. These people will aid the child in the construction of the settings of this system. Since school becomes the extension of the home, a child must feel that he/she is welcome, nurtured, and loved in this environment. So as a teacher, I must be able to adjust and fit in with children that have different learning styles to be able to meet their learning needs. There are different types of learners basically because they are raised in various ways and environment. I will engage the students in different activities that will build good and healthy relationships among his/her family members, peers, and such. I will immerse the students in tasks that will further hone their skills. It would also be helpful if I as a teacher would be able to instill moral values that will promote development and therefore contribute in shaping them into responsible individuals.
1.) Nature and nurture both came from the Latin word “natus” meaning birth. Everything has its nature, nature which means what it has been born or made for, and entailing all its properties and attributes which we say are natural for them. Nature represents all that is good in a creature as all are good and pristine in their original state and that’s what we need to nurture.
ReplyDelete2.) According to the theory, the child is the center of the ecological model. We all know that the child is part of education; they are the center of the curriculum, that’s why schools do exist. And as a teacher we need to fulfill those things that are needed in order for the child to become whole or a better person. We need to know the factors that affect the development of a child so that we become more effective in every aspect that we are going to conduct. In this theory we can identify the kind of environment the child has. Microsystem consists of parents, peers, neighbors and teachers that are directly affecting the child. In mesosystem and the other systems although it indirectly affects the child it is still has a huge impact to the child’s development. The point of this model is that each component interacts with one another, making a highly complex context the child grows up in. The child is not just a passive recipient of what goes on in his or her life. Another thing is that nothing remains the same, so as the child and its environment is also changing.
I believe that nurture is more important for education development. because a child's family background largely dictated educational development. The children will be better if the parents and teacher direct them correctly.that's why the school will improve the way of teaching and raise academic standard for the student.
ReplyDeleteNature and nurture affect in total development of a child as a whole. The first stage in his development take place inside the womb of the mother. He is made thru the union of the sperm and the egg cell of the parents. And we all know that that the two cell carry the DNA or genetics of the parents that will influence the mental capability of the child that includes his Intelligence quotient or his ability to absorb things in his environment. After he was born his nature and nurture takes place at the same time. His nature will be fully develop at school by the subjects that will be taught to him. And his nurture development will be influence by the people and society around him.And if these two had a good effect to the child then he will be a successful individual. But we cannot forget that hard work will also make an individual or his nurture. This is the factor that most of the time is the x factor of a person. If he is able to make on his shortage in terms of his nature then this also defy him as a person. I can say that both are important, nature and nurture has his share to a development of a person if the person can make for his shortages.
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher we are the guiding force of a student to succeed in our objective and that is for him to learn. But teaching a student doesn't that easy, we should consider other factors like his ways of learning. Our students are not the same in terms on their absorption to what is taught to them. Because of this we should understand them, we should know what is really their conditions.
